Picture of a young vine

def. Work Trade (verb).  The act of fostering growth, knowledge, and both technological and spiritual advancement through the gathering of a diversity of talents upon an offering of lodging, food, and/or other amenities in exchange.

We have plenty of projects in operation or to be considered.  Many of these are constructs of ecological design or intelligent function.  As well, we are humble people who don't presume ourselves gurus, so are also always open to talents you may bring with you.

Vineyard

Spring 2009
Tasks: Vine Planting, Pruning, Wind Fence
Learn about vines!  This spring, we are installing a special type of 'Wyoming-style' windbreak buck fence, using native hawthorn for our acre of vines.  We're also replanting winter kill, and pruning the living.  You will learn about  native hardwoods, evapotranspiration, trellis design, and the soil/water requirements of all of our varietes.

Barn

Spring 2009
Tasks: Timber framing, notching, siding, finish work, fencing
The goats, chickens, and horses are currently living out of a partial home...  rough for them, but good for us, because if this autumn is anything like the last, we're going to have an extended, cool, sunny three months to finish.  We have all the tools and are willing to do on-the-job training.  See our gallery for the progress so far.

Greenhouse

Summer-Autumn 2009
Tasks: Timber framing, notching, siding, finish work, fencing
It's about time we figure out a space for starting our seedlings.  So, we're designing a building to house a solar hot water system for the house and cabin, greywater recycling, earthen-concrete-window-bale structure to extend our growing season and recycle some waters before they go back to our aquifer.

Strawbale Sauna

September to December, 2009
Tasks: Build a sauna!
Nothing feels quite as nice as a solid soaking...  not much else compares when the leaves pass and the snow begins to accumulate.  Be a part of this, and learn strawbale construction at the same time.

The living quarters...

We have an attractive one-room pad in an aspen grove for you to stay in.  It has a bed, sink, closet, counter tops, cupboards, propane stove and heater, table, numerous book shelves, and a small amount of storage.  It comes completely stocked with cookware, kitchenware, silverware, and maybe even a pair of rubber boots.  The living space also includes a secluded outdoor shower and toilet, and the best campfire pit for miles.  During the summer we do as much outdoor cooking as possible, in the winter, we'll share our kitchen with you.
